FEATURED ARTISTS

Laura Drey
Stephanie Gonzalez
Marcos Hernández
Carolina Otero
Generation One highlights the current generation of emerging Latinx artists who maintain an active creative practice in Houston and surveys the ways in which their artistic pursuits are pushing traditional mediums to their limits. Each artist featured decisively combines alternative and contemporary image-making processes via their respective practices.
Artists for this exhibition were selected via the first-ever Open Call organized by MantecaHTX, a recently-launched registry & directory of Houston Latinx artists and creatives. Among the rapidly growing pool of artists that have created profile pages on the online directory, the artists included in Generation One demonstrate an earnest effort to push the boundaries of the artistic mediums which they employ.
ABOUT THE UNION
The Union is a newly launched exhibitions and events venue in Houston’s Old Sixth Ward which hosts community programs in an effort to showcase the work of local and regional artists. Housed in a restored Victorian bungalow, this fresh addition to Arts District Houston endeavors to activate community engagement and to provide a forum through which creatives can engage with the thriving arts community in Houston.
ABOUT MANTECAHTX
MantecaHTX is a public online index of Latinx artists active in the Greater Houston area. This collaborative initiative is made possible by a partnership with Tony Diaz, founder of non-profit Nuestra Palabra, and through a team of veteran and emerging Houston creatives: Artists and educators Delilah Montoya, Gabriel Martinez, and Julia Barbosa Landois, with Francis Almendárez and a team of arts organizers and curators: Theresa Escobedo, Tina Hernandez, and Moe Penders.
